Stop baby milk promotion

Unicef in de UK is een stevige actie begonnen en wil dat het adverteren, promoten en valselijk voorlichten van moeders en gezondheidswerkers door de kunstvoedingsindustrie verboden wordt.

Stop baby milk promotion

Parents have the right to receive accurate information on how best to feed their babies and infants. However, the inappropriate promotion of baby milk (which is sometimes referred to as infant formula) can confuse parents and undermine breastfeeding as the healthiest way to feed babies and infants ‘“ making it harder than ever for parents to make an informed choice.

In 1995, a law, based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation and Unicef, was introduced to prevent companies from promoting baby milk in the UK. However, the law was introduced in a manner which still allows producers of baby milk to legally promote products for babies who are six months or older. Unicef believes that the law needs to be strengthened so that no baby milk should be promoted.

Unicef UK, the NCT and Save the Children UK are asking the Government to stop formula milk promotion in the UK. Parents need reliable information based on evidence, not commercial pressure from baby milk companies. Our three organisations are members of the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition, an alliance of 39 organisations ‘“ including five Royal Colleges and the trade unions Unison, Unite and the CPHVA ‘“ working to improve awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding and its role in reducing health inequalities in the UK. The changes to the law recommended in this report form part of Objective zeven of the Breastfeeding Manifesto.
